Beacon

Los Angeles, CA

Beacon is a residential teaching community for 60 men with former lifetime sentences. We refer to these men as “mentors” because of their of abundant lived experience.

Some of our mentors were incarcerated for 50 years. Our goal is to provide them with a chance to process life experiences, strengthen reintegration support and gain employment, education, health services & permanent housing. Mentors receive largely plant based meals, mindful meditation practice, and yoga weekly.

One key component of services at this campus is family reunification to help in the rebuilding of relationships. Amity has helped place over 1000 former lifers into direct services.

Letter from a student

Dear Amity,

Leaving prison after 27 years left me anxious and concerned about my future. I was without family or friends. I was to be housed at a Transitional Housing facility called Beacon House, a home for returning citizens.

From the moment I arrived, I was showed acceptance, understanding, and kindness. I was provided food and shelter, a home to feel safe.

Amity helped smooth my rough edges by creating a safe environment for me to process my trauma. I have been able to gain and nurture the truest of friendships.

As I move forward, I now know that I will not be alone. Thanks to Amity, I now have a job. I’ve been given a chance to take care of myself. I am productive, and once again, I feel like a citizen. Amity has picked me up and has helped save my life. Thank you, Amity.
